SC and GA October 2013

Delayed the trip by a week due to the tropical storm heading into the area and then another two days when two fronts met creating rain. I lucked out and then hit a two week window of almost perfect weather.

The first stop was Charleston for 3 days. I did a long walk of the Battery along the bay and then into the streets with the historical homes. It was a gorgeous day and the home are unbelievable. I like this one — the people put skeletons up on the balcony for Halloween.

Winding Road - historic Charleston

After Charleston we camped on the beach for 4 days — it was heaven. We hiked trails, walked miles and miles of beach, checked out lighthouses, and the dogs swam — a lot. They walked so much they were too tired to jump in the truck the day we left. I had to lift 75 lb. dogs into the back of the Xterra. Still, not too shabby for  8 and 10 year old labs. There’s a slide show below of our activities.

Lighthouses

I love lighthouses and in particular am enchanted with the Freznel lenses that are in a lot of them. Hunting Island was a quick run up the lighthouse since the dogs were in the truck. The dogs were so pooped by the time we got to Tybee Island I left them in the camper to rest and had a lot of time to go through their lighthouse and grounds. Tybee is a working light with a 1000 watt bulb that has visibility up to 18 miles out. The Coast Guard maintains the light. You can see damage to the Freznel lenses so I asked. The light has been hit by a couple hurricanes and one earthquake and they think the lenses were chipped during those events. It’s still a spectacular lens. Lighthouses got there own slide show.

Sunrise and moon rise shots

And of course I adore the sun and moon rising over the ocean so there’s pics of that as well. There was a full moon by the end of the stay at the beach.

Camper

This was the first time I’ve used the awning/screen room that can be attached to the camper. While it was hard to install on my own — if there hadn’t been a picnic table to stand on I wouldn’t have been able to get the top most support in place — it was worth the work to have the extra living space and protection from the mosquitoes. I love the screen room! So did the dogs.
